Definition: The generic photographer

The generic photographer is what AI produces without voice infrastructure: writing that is competent, inoffensive, and indistinguishable from anyone else's.

Voice infrastructure is the supporting documentation that prevents this: a voice guide, project knowledge, and a feedback loop that together make AI output sound like one specific photographer rather than a composite of every photographer whose writing fed the model. Canonical definition.

Give an AI thin context and ask for photography copy. It tends to invent the same competent, pleasant, interchangeable photographer wearing four different outfits.

The five-minute test

Ask AI who you are.

  1. Open the AI tool you normally use.
  2. Give it your business name and website.
  3. Ask what actually distinguishes you.
  4. Make it show its evidence.
Warning: may reveal an alarming amount of “passion”
TRY THIS:

Describe [MY PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS] using only information you can verify publicly.

What does it specialize in?
What materially distinguishes it from competing photographers?
For each claim, cite the public evidence supporting it.

If you cannot verify a claim, say so plainly.
Do not infer or invent distinctions.
If the answer is vague, the problem may not be the prompt. It may be the public record.

AI cannot reliably sound like a specific business if the specific business is barely documented.

Plot twist

AI-assisted does not have to mean generic.

The fix is not a blacklist of suspicious words or a ceremonial burning of every em dash. It is better source material: documented facts, real examples, a working voice guide, and enough context for the tool to represent the business accurately.

*Not actually trademarked. Probably. The Generic Photographer would definitely say they are “award-winning,” though.
